The Penang Post Part I

Super-delayed, I know! So let's get started right away.

The Penang trip came to light during the semester when one of my coursemates suggested a trip after the exams. It got draggy, as how every decision is with the mechatronics bunch, but in the end, it was a groupon deal on car rental(which we didn't buy in the end) that really got things rolling.

Long story short, one day after our exams ended, we headed to Penang by bus! Everyone came to Puduraya/Pudu Sentral in the morning. Short breakfast at the food court and off we went on the 8.30am Konsortium bus.

*Before I proceed further, I'd like to apologise for the coming photos as they will not include any of our faces. To check us out, go Facebook :P

Bus was uneventful. On hindsight, it was a decent bus, decent driver, decent speed and decent stop intervals. Go Konsortium!

Anyhow, we reached Butterworth at about 1pm and made our way towards the ferry terminal with, yes, with  all those luggage. The terminal has one of the funniest, probably oldest mechanism. You have to pay by coins and there's a manned counter there just to exchange coins for you. *facepalm* Btw, it was RM1.20 towards the island and free on the way back.

The ferry is awesome. I'm officially in love with ferry rides =) The view is beautiful, almost out of Malaysia. Water's pretty clear (It IS the ocean after all!). The ports are lined with petroleum companies, sampans, tugboats, ships, and cruises. Going towards Penang, you'll get to see the famed Penang bridge on your left, and skyscrapers like the Komtar tower and the clock tower right in front of you with mountains in the backdrop. Have I mention I like ferry rides? :)

The ferries are named after islands, like Pulau something. But look at ours!

Anyhow, we reached Weld Quay.

*Before I continue, I'd like to warn you that this post will be pretty long as it also serves as my personal documentary*

Yes, anyhow, we reached Weld Quay. There were 3 options from this point to get to our hotel - bus, taxi, legs. I don't know how it was decided but 8 people somehow decided to lug all the overweight bags right through Little India to Love Lane from Weld Quay. Must have looked like some refugees, come to think of it.. haha

Nevertheless, we arrived in Red Inn, a converted hotel situated in Love Lane, off Chulia Street. It's quite a achievement, really, considering the hot sun, the amount of weight carried and the distance we walked blindly guided by instincts and a GPS.

Not only that, we decided to not rest much and went straight to our first stop. Probably cause we were literally starving at this point - 2pm. So, you've probably guessed the first stop by now - food! In particular, Nasi Kandar. Line Clear Nasi Kandar to be exact.

Ordering Nasi Kandar is crazy I tell you. It's so chaotic, yet so systematic, you have no idea what you just did! Haha... Everyone seems to be shouting something, scooping something or counting something. You only get to order when the guy stops and ask you "Makan?". And then goes on to guess your dishes. Seriously, they don't really ask you what you want, they just take it for you..LOL I wonder if it's a sales technique to con tourists like us. Mine turned out to be RM12.60, simply cause I fell for his kambing suggestion. Oh well, being con is part of the tourist experience isn't it? haha

Next up, cendol! To be honest, I don't know where it is? Thank goodness for Le Boss and his GPS. It's the famous Teo Chew Cendol apparently, so yeap, we got to freshen things up with this icy dessert. And then, there's always the guy who doesn't take beans...

We then went to Komtar to find our best friend LGE towel cause there will always be one guy who forgets something. In this case, it just happens to be the same guy who doesn't take beans. You know who you are ;)

Towel in hand, we took the free bus to get home. But we missed our stop (that aunty la!) and ended up visiting the beach. Walking along the beach, we arrived at the Esplanade (I think) and Fort Cornwallis (which these bunch of Engineers decided wasn't worth the entrance fee by reasonable arguments, LOL) and settled instead for a bird and bird-shot infested place plus super duper slow service coconut shake. Seriously, don't ever come here. Ever. It's near Fort Cornwallis and it's tempting, but just don't.

After that, we just decided to walk back to Red Inn as we didn't want to wait for the bus. Back home, it was rest, rest and more rest till we were hungry. And when we were, we simply walked out to Chulia Street which has street hawker food every single night. Awesome place. Dinner was simple. I had Yi Fu Mee (I think), which is like Yee Mee but bigger and friend KungFu style, if that's what you call it.

Then it was back to Red Inn for card games! Chor Dai Di and Bluff till we were too tired while Le Boss and Deputy Le Boss planned the next day itinerary. I know, Best Friends Awards needed here. Haha, so that's it for Day One!

Rosemary Lemon Chicken Baked with Cheese

So, this is what happened. Last Sunday, my cousin ordered BBQ chicken from the Western shop in a hawker centre. And I said, that's so not worth it! Approximately RM10, and I said that I can do this myself at home! Then, you guessed it! My Uncle gave a challenge. Challenge accepted!

Today, I prepared, as the title clearly states - Rosemary Lemon Chicken Baked with Cheese. I used this recipe as a rough guideline. Some tweaking included adding thames and lemon zest on top of the rosemary, topped everything off with olive oil and added cheese on top of the chicken.

And here's the end results:

No potatoes! Yeap, kinda regretted as the meal wasn't quite as filling, but the chicken turned out to be really, really, I repeat really good! Never thought baking could be so easy and awesome! I usually worry about undercooked chicken, but this turned out perfect.

The insides were juicy and succulent, the outside a bit brownish, topped with the flavourful cheese, it's heavenly! I wish I prepared more, as blogging about this just makes me hungrier!

However, the salad is always a let down. I have no idea how to make a salad awesome without throwing too much mayonnaise and thousand island sauce into the mix.

Overall, chicken was perfect! Potatoes would make it godlike! But the salad just needs more improvement! Will definitely try this again!

Eat To Live

Not live to eat; and so the quote goes. I can't say I'm at one of the extremes (looking down at my spare tyre), btu I'm definitely changing my eating habits since IDC 34. Eating less, and eating slower. This brings me to my new favourite restaurant - Bei Zhan.

If you're familiar with Chinese meals, they usually come serving after serving and there will be like 8 to 9 courses. Each course serves everyone on the table to the brim. You can only imagine what happens to your tummy after 9 courses.

Back to the topic. Bei Zhan is different in the sense that they don't overfeed you like turkeys for Thanksgiving. Instead their portion are quite small, but just enough that everyone gets a taste. Take a look:

The first time I went, I was quite shocked as I was worried there wouldn't be enough food for everyone. But this is the second time I dined there and both occasions turned out to be just right. Plates were sparkling clean and tummies were filled just right. Not to mention also, in an effort to eat more healthily, we had more greeeeeeens >>>

There was also a very unique dish with mangoes, grapes, macadamia nuts, and a host of other "healthy foods" seen in the middle of the first picture.
Anyhow, I'm not here to promote Bei Zhan, but just to encourage myself and people out there not to overfeed yourselves this CNY/year/ever, instead eat to live. Happy Li Chun everyone!

Prosperity Burger

McDonald's Malaysia have this annual Prosperity Burger promotion around the New Year period. It's not that I like McDonald's so much that I try every new burger on their menu, but their advertisements just leave you wanting a bite! Damn!

And so it happens every year, I'll have this Prosperity Burger. The thing here is, I have absolutely why the burger has to be soooooooo spicy!! I think it's one of the spiciest thing I've eaten. The black pepper just leaves a gaping hole in your esophagus long after you're done with the burger.

Maybe someone told McDonald's that prosperity must be HOT! At any rate, take this burger at your own risk! Don't say I didn't warn you.

Picture from here.

Cafe Barbera: Eat All You Can Pizza Review

While on a shopping mission, stomachs do get hungry. And this time around, guess what's for lunch? PIZZA! Pizza, pizza and more pizza!
This is Cafe Barbera's latest promotion:

For Rm15, you'd expect super-thick-crusted pizzas ahem*pizza hut* ahem. But, nope, this is really good pizza! Very Italian, very delicious! The crust is not only thin, it's crisp and baked to perfection! To add cherry on the icing, you're served! Like this:

Honestly, I would rate their service very highly. They kept asking how was the food, was there anything we need, and we even had fun conversations. Oh, and they generously provided cheese powder even though we only asked for chilli sauce. Alright, here's the main course: PIZZA!

I ate something like 17 slices! Yeap, that's worth your RM15 alright. Heck, a Domino's pizza would cost you RM20++ already. Another fun part I like is that the pizzas come randomly. So, you'll never know what to expect (yes, I love surprises!). Drinks are the normal cafe prices. We got a jug of iced lemon tea and some cappuccino (since it says 140 years of coffee perfection):

And if you're still having any qualms about overcharging the other stuff that's not in the promotion, here's the breakdown:

here's the funny guy again

So, go ahead! As they cannot say for certain how long this will last :) But sign up for gym on the way, yeah!

YinYang Fish

After studying for long hours, you get hungry..and inspired to cook :) Cooked from random stuff found in the fridge.

marinated fish for 30 mins

first fish!

with cheese. it's supposed to be baked but, oh well

the first one - nice colour, but less tasty

The second one - probably due to the residue in the pan , this one's a lot darker, but tastier too!
